CEM SIGN

As promised in my last post, here are graves from the Pet Cemetery. It is no longer the peaceful spot it once was now that it cowers under the construction of the new feeder to the Golden Gate Bridge. But if you’re in the area you should catch it before it’s completely destroyed.

I’m a blogger of too many words, more times than not violating Beth Mann’s “1000 words or less” rule.  So I’ll leave it mostly to the pictures:

CEM - MARTHA

Earliest I could find – 8 years ago there were still graves from the 40s.

CEM - RASPBERRY CEM - CASEY CEM-DIXON CEM - WIGGLES CEM - STOLI

CEM - JUDY

Italian style, with a photo of a loved one.

CEM - LADDIE CEM - HONEY 1968 CEM - PUMPKIN BIRD CEM TAM

These next two are unfortunately typical of the degradation of the place.

CEM - MOUSE CEM - RUINS CEM - HEART

Another heart left in San Francisco.

This is tres cool, LM. I’ve never seen a pet cemetery in real life, although I’ve read about them (and I’m not talking about Stephen King, either). The ashes of our two dogs — Jo and Max — are buried under a rose of Sharon out back.
Most excellent post…
I had no idea once again.. made me so sad that it might be destroyed
HUGGGGGGGGGG
someone still misses Stoli, Son of Kiska – thanks for the photo tour
Princess Kiska, a champion Samoyed, was born 9/17/62 – ah, the Internet (http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/samoyed/dog.html?id=409227)
I had to sneak through the hole in the fence to get these pics. Mrs. Muse was standing watch, and just told me there was a cop car cruising nearby…I can see the headline: “Old hippie busted breaking into Pet Cemetery.”
Must’ve been the pets of the 1%. R
Beautiful. Thank you. My cats who died last year were all cremated and are in little boxes, still haven’t scattered them.
It’s kind of heard for me to believe that someone who have a special place for a rat or mouse, but whatever makes you happy is okay by me.
Photos full of love that endures.
Great post and pictures. Evidence that we share love with more than other people. Wish I’d had a way to have my beloved MimiCat buried but I loved her just the same. The last photo says it powerfully.
Excellent posts, both of them!
This is actually pretty sad Luminous. Not just the deterioration of the place but the reminder of how big a role pets play in our lives and big a hole they leave. This has been on my mind for a while as my mother is in her early 80s and has a six year old dog that she loves. I don’t know how she’ll cope if it goes before she does.
If you are still in San Fran do check out the little “Shoe Garden” in Alamo Square. A real delight! Bring a small plant from the grocery store and you my find a vacant shoe. Of course a campy shoe is always a good addition. 🙂
Strangely enough, I’ve never been to this one, though I grew up nearby. I’ve been to the one in Colma. Pet cemeteries are different than people ones. The tributes are more individual, unique, far less formal or stylized, and often very painful. I had read that the Presidio one was now closed. Too bad about the construction. I love that area.
Oh that’s beautiful. Made me a little sad. Such tenderness. And thanks for the mention!
I love this. when I first moved to san francisco I lived in an apartment overlooking the cemetery at the mission dolores. It’s still one of my favorite spots in the city.
My in-laws have their cocker spaniel buried in a pet cemetary called Bubbling Wells. For some it brings the needed peace of losing a furry or feathered family member. Great post!
